In the run up to Christmas, time often feels short and frantic as you try to juggle your day-to-day life with the seemingly endless planning and preparation that goes into creating a perfect Christmas and avoiding last minute disasters like the forgotten crackers, or burnt mince pies.
It can feel like the true spirit of the season gets a bit lost in the never-ending to do list. So before we reach those last hectic weeks, take some time to consider an alternative to overconsumption and stressful spending. In this blog post, we’ve pulled together some low-cost festive activities to help you spend more time with your family & friends, and (hopefully) less time stressing!

Visit a Local Farm or Outdoor Centre
Local Outdoor Centres are a great way to get the family out and about in the colder months. Spend some time exploring the working facilities, petting the farmyard animals, and getting involved in trails or treasure hunts. These centres often offer free or low-cost activities and are a great place to get involved in your local community. Look out for the on-site farm shops as well, which are a great place to pick up unique and sustainable gifts!

Get Baking
If you just can’t face getting out of the house on another grey day, put some carols on and get cosy inside with some festive baking. Simple spiced biscuits are a great and fairly easy option for baking with kids who can get creative with the shapes and decoration. They also have the added benefit of making the house smell delicious! Or try something a bit more challenging to impress your holiday guests or indulge in on your own. Homemade treats can make lovely and thoughtful gifts as well.

A Winter Walk
Spending time outdoors might feel increasingly tough as the days become shorter, but there are ways to make it more enticing. How about preparing some hot chocolate (or something stronger!) to take with you in a flask, or pre cook some sausages and wrap them up for a warming treat. You’ll certainly be able to appreciate nature’s winter beauty better when your cold hands are warmed by a comforting hot drink. Or brighten up a dreary evening by taking a walk around your neighbourhood to check out everyone’s lights & decorations!

Christmas Craft Day
Another great idea for avoiding the chill - gather your family, a group of friends, or simply enjoy some solo relaxation time, and get making! You can set the mood with some festive music and scented candles, or put a classic film on in the background. Christmas is a great time to get inspired and try something new. Grab some used scraps of wrapping paper, or cut out from an old magazine to create fun & unique decorations. Gather items from your hot chocolate walk such as pine cones, berries, and twigs, to create your very own wreath. Or, try your hand at something new and have a go at felting or a sewing craft kit. The finished pieces might even make it onto the tree!

Cosy Corner
If you’re craving a retreat from the festive craziness, carve out some ‘me’ time by putting together a space for you - it could be your favourite armchair, or some artfully arranged cushions on the floor. Turn off your phone and take a few hours to read your favourite book, flick through a magazine, or catch up on that series you’ve been missing.

Games Night
The final suggestion on our list is Games Night! This is a great one for easy, low-cost ways to get everyone together and can be as chilled or as competitive as you choose! Whether you want a relaxed evening playing snap with the kids and nibbling mince pies, or a high stakes competition with festive cocktails and team tournaments, a games night will be sure to get everyone smiling. You could even pull together your own quiz if you’re feeling creative.
